A college student from New York won $1,000,000 won the New York Lottery's new Sweet Million draw game. Michael Sanchez is a native of El Salvador and is currently enrolled at Nassau Community College as a Liberal Arts major. According to Eyewitness News on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, Sanchez had dreams of becoming a nurse, but doesn't believe his new winnings will go to his head. Sanchez said, "My brother taught me a lot about the ups and downs in life. He told me not to go crazy, to enjoy the little things and just be happy." Sanchez plans to use some of the money to help his mom pay the mortgage and to travel to Mexico.The ticket was purchased at the Joe Fuel store on Newbridge Road in Hicksville, New York on Monday, Oct. 5, 2009. In order to win the $1,000,000 prize money, players must match all six numbers drawn from a field of 40.
Oddly Enough
Water buffalo were responsible for a collision between two passenger trains in Egypt. Officials said the buffalo traveled onto the tracks causing the trains to collide, according to Sky News on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2009. The crash happened southwest of the Egyptian capital of Cairo. A total of 18 people were killed and 39 others were wounded in the collision. The accident occurred when one of the trains struck the animal and stopped. A second train was traveling from behind and smashed into the first train while it was stopped on the tracks. The second train was assumed to be traveling at full speed. The death toll was lowered since the first reports predicted 25 people killed and 55 wounded. The crash doesn't seem to have any foreigners involved.
