Class of 2010 candidates encourage involvement

Issue date: 4/19/07 Section: News
The Class of 2010 has spent a year getting adjusted to campus, learning the ropes, and fundraising for the future. Now, 28 candidates are hoping to represent the class in some position.

President

Although Jaimie Scambio, the current Class of 2010 president, is running uncontested for reelection, she claimed she is her own biggest competition.

"I'll push myself the hardest" regardless of whether other candidates were running against her, she said. Having become comfortable with Student Congress procedures, Scambio said she is ready to keep lead her class through the funding and planning for the Sophomore Ball and Junior Ring Weekend.

"I hope to continue to set that foundation financially," she said. In addition, Scambio said she is looking for more legislative changes to effect change on a larger level. She pointed to "matters regarding a student union" and the "equalization of parietals" as two issues of concern.

Vice President

Also running for reelection is Class of 2010 Vice President Andrew Kelley. One issue he said he would like to address is expanding the designated smoking spots that are scattered around campus.

"I want to make it so there is a smoking area outside each dorm," he said, adding that currently, not every dorm has an easily accessible smoking area. The closest area to McVinney, for example, is near the mailroom-not a viable option for residents who want a late-night smoke, said Kelley.

In addition, the business management major and political science/history minor said he would like to use the publicity the alcohol abuse report generated in Rhode Island to raise money, which could be put toward making Slavin Center a student center. In Kelley's vision, it would be "a 24/7 place where [students] can meet other people and have a good time" without alcohol.

Lauren Riley and Ryan Totolo, the current Class of 2010 treasurer, are also running for vice president.
