The Providence College field hockey team started out the season with a demanding 6–1 record. Their first game resulted in a tough loss against Boston College, but they have not lost a game since. On Friday, Sept. 18, the team had a 2–0 upset win against No. 15 Old Dominion to open up Big East play. This was their first win against Old Dominion since 2016 and is only the second time they’ve beat them in program history. Prior to this game, the last time the Friars defeated a ranked opponent was Oct. 18, 2024, when they won against No. 5 University of Connecticut in double overtime. The team has succeeded greatly this season as a whole, but one standout player for the Friars has been No. 14, Bo Martina. She hails from Nieuw Vennep in the Netherlands, where she developed her impressive field hockey talent. It has been nothing but success for Martina at Providence, as she has played in almost every game of her career. Her accolades include, but are not limited to, Big East Co-Midfielder of the Year (2025), All Big East First Team (2024, 2025), NFHCA Division 1 All-Northeast Region First Team (2024, 2025), and Big East All Academic Team (2023–24, 2024–25).

Martina continues to build on her momentum from last season this fall. So far, she has played and started in every game for the Friars. In the upset against Old Dominion last Friday, Martina’s scoring savvy put the Friars on the board early, as she converted a penalty corner attempt. On Sept. 11, the Friars defeated Sacred Heart 4–1. In this game, Martina provided two goals and one assist to help lead the team to victory.

With her amazing start to the season, Martina continues to show why she is one of the top midfielders in the Big East and a critical piece of the Friars’ current success this season. Looking further ahead, Martina is likely to surpass last season’s offensive totals if she keeps up her current pace. Her presence in the Friars’ starting lineup will be key as the team continues deeper into Big East play, where competition will only grow and intensify. PC has its eyes set on a Big East Tournament spot this November, and Martina’s leadership and abilities will be a key factor in whether the team can make a deep postseason run.
