Last Wednesday night, the Class of 2027 drew record-breaking numbers as they gathered in McPhail’s for their first major event as a senior class. McPhail’s shut down for a brief 30 minutes to allow Student Congress and the office of Student Engagement and Leadership to set up for the event. The hallmark of the event was the raffle: the Class of 2027 offered season basketball tickets, three Senior Ring Weekend tickets, and a Ninja Creami. But before the event even began, excitement for the prizes grew so tremendously that a line wrapped around the entirety of lower Slavin. Across the night, over 450 members of the Class of 2027 settled into McPhail’s for three hours of friendship, sports games, and class bonding. Wednesday night marked the second game of the American League Wild Card Series between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. With the Red Sox already having lost the night before, students teetered on their seats with dread or hope as the game slowly got away from them, with the Yankees scoring six runs in the sixth inning. The Yankees won 9–2 and swept the Red Sox in the series, eliminating them from the postseason. In addition to the baseball game, pool, ping-pong, and foosball were available and stirred friendly rivalries throughout the night. Additionally, the senior class did not go hungry. Right as senior night started, 40 pizzas from Francesco’s arrived, with another 35 pizzas and 100 chicken tenders from Big Tony’s arriving halfway through the event, in addition to McPhails’ legendary popcorn. The actual event, complete with three Public Safety officers as bouncers, was a smashing success. The event was conceptualized and organized by the Class of 2027 Executive Board of Student Congress: President Reilly Shea ’27, Vice-President James Black ’27, Secretary Maggie Ozanian ’27, and Treasurer Ben Giumetti ’27. The event was executed in coordination with Maggie Vaulton from SEAL and Robert Deasy from McPhail’s. Class treasurer Giumetti, commenting on the success of the night, remarked, “A Sox game, some pool, some drinks, and all my friends—what more could I ask for from my favorite place?” The verdict of the night? A huge success with a record-breaking crowd. While senior year has just begun, this kick-off marks the first of many major events coming up for the Class of 2027, like Senior Ring Weekend, and ultimately ending with Commencement on May 23.
