The Providence College men’s soccer team is off to a blazing start to begin the 2026-27 season. The Friars have won four of their six games to kick off the year, including beating the University of Rhode Island with a 3–0 win. Although this triumph was an all-around team effort from our Friars, one player shined bright in this past event. Redshirt Junior Brian Gareppy ’27 was at the head of the charge in overcoming the boys from Kingston. The Rhode Island native conquered his local state school’s defense, scoring two of the three Friar goals on the night. In the 53rd minute, Gareppy took advantage of a gorgeous cross from Canadian Angelo Ventrella ’29, knocking a stunning header past the keeper and into the side of the net. This would not only give Providence a 2–0 lead, but would also be Gareppy’s first goal of the ’26 season. Intent on ravaging the Rams, Gareppy added another goal to his stat sheet less than 30 minutes after the first. He once again capitalized on a moment of chaos, this time after a solid attempt from captain Brandon Marshall ’27 was deflected by the URI keeper, placing the ball in the back of the net for the second time of the night and solidifying this year’s Ocean State rivalry as a comfortable win for the Friars. And who else to win the battle of Rhode Island than the junior from Warwick, 20 minutes south of Friartown. Gareppy has logged over 150 minutes for the Friars in the past two seasons and has been a valuable contributor to Providence’s overall winning record over the past few years. Gareppy has been a phenomenal midfield asset for the Friars, and his past contributions coupled with a spectacular performance lastMonday have earned him the title of your Providence College athlete of the week! After this showing and with over half the season left to be played, No. 26 for Providence is a number that should be on every college soccer fan’s radar.
