Track and Field:
The Providence College men and women’s track and field teams competed in Bryant University’s Black and Gold Invitational last Saturday, April 2. In total, the Friars walked away from the event with 15 athletes finishing in the top five of their respective events. The women’s squad was extremely successful: in the 400 meter hurdles, sophomore Meg Hughes ‘24 broke her own school and personal record by coming in first place with a time of 61.34. Alex O’Neill ‘23 also came in first in the 800 meter run, setting a meet record of 2:09.17.
Hockey:
In recent college hockey news, the Hockey East conference has reached a new media rights deal with ESPN and ESPN+. This deal confirms that ESPN will broadcast and stream over 300 games annually from the men and women’s sides of Hockey East for the next six years, starting next fall. Additionally, Hockey East has settled a deal with its long-time partner NESN. The deal with NESN says that at least 50 Hockey East contests will be televised each season. These two deals with television’s top sports outlets will no doubt keep the Hockey East division and Providence Hockey in the spotlight for years to come.
Men’s Basketball:
After a historic regular season and NCAA Tournament run from the Providence College Men’s Basketball Team, coach Ed Cooley has deservedly been named the Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of The Year Award. Cooley is the first Friars coach to receive this prestigious award, following the Friars’ most successful season in decades. A 27-6 regular season record is something to be extremely proud of, especially when followed by a trip to the Sweet Sixteen where your elimination loss comes from the National Championship-winning University of Kansas Jayhawks. We can only hope that Ed Cooley sticks around Providence for many more years.
Softball:
The Providence College Softball team rolled over fellow Big East opponent, Georgetown University, last Sunday in a 6-0 shutout. With this win, the Friars move to 21-9 on the season and 8-4 in Big East play. Against Georgetown, Madi Traver ’22 started the scoring off with a solo homerun in the second inning. In the fourth inning, Lea Kosinski ‘25 came into the lineup as a pinch hitter and hit her first career grand slam with the bases loaded to improve PC’s lead to 6-0. On the mound, Daniela Alvarez ’22 pitched a complete game allowing only two hits and striking out nine batters.
