Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team hosted two Big East opponents this week: Butler University and DePaul University. On Wednesday night, Feb. 4, the Friars hosted Butler in a close game. Butler’s Finley Bizjack sent the game to overtime with two missed free throws. Nilavan Daniels ’28 hit a big three that helped push the game to double overtime, where the Friars ultimately pulled away to win 97–87. Jaylin Sellers ’26G led the way with 36 points. Jason Edwards ’26G made his return Saturday, Feb. 7, against DePaul and led all scorers with 25 points. The Friars controlled this game from start to finish, winning 90–72. The next home game is a 1:00 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, Feb. 14 against St. John’s University.
Men’s Ice Hockey
The men’s ice hockey team extended its winning streak to nine in a row this week. The weekend started off at the University of New Hampshire on Friday, Feb. 6. The Friars went down one goal early, but responded with six unanswered goals. Will Elger ’28 led the way with two goals. Hudson Malinoski ’27, Aleksi Kivioja ’28, Tanner Adams ’27, and Logan Sawyer ’28 all scored one. The Friars returned to a home crowd Saturday night, Feb. 7, to take on the University of Vermont. The Friars once again won 6–1. Kivioja led the way with two goals, and Malinoski, Donovan McCoy ’29, John Mustard ’28, and Clint Levens ’27 all had one. The Friars are atop the Hockey East Conference by eight points. Northeastern University comes to town on Friday, Feb. 13, and Saturday, Feb. 14.
Women’s Basketball
The Friars played three games in the last week. They ended January with a 62–57 home loss to St. John’s University on Jan. 31. On Wednesday, Feb. 4, they traveled to Marquette University, where they suffered a 78–61 loss. On Sunday, Feb. 8, the Xavier University Musketeers came to Alumni Hall. After the first quarter, the score was 17–11, and the Friars didn’t look back from there. The Friars played a great game, outrebounding Xavier 42–28. Sabou Gueye ’G26 led the way with a career high of 29 points, going 13/23 from the field. She didn’t just control the game on the offensive side of the ball—defensively, she had five steals, leading the way to a Friar victory.
Men’s Lacrosse
Friday, Feb. 6, the men’s lacrosse team hosted in-state rival Bryant University on Chapey Field. At the end of the first quarter, the Friars were trailing 3–2, but by halftime the tides had turned, and the Friars were up 7–6. The Friars would ultimately advance to 2–0 with a 16–11 victory over the Bulldogs. Rhett Chambers ’27 and Richie Joseph ’26 both had four goals. Sam Brezell ’28 and Matt Lazzaro ’27 each had a hat trick. Chris Matia ’28 and Chris Jaskiewski ’28 rounded out the scoring, each adding a goal in the Friars win. The Friars next home game is Saturday, Feb. 21, against Brown University after an away game on Saturday, Feb.14, at Harvard University.

Women’s Basketball
Our Providence College women’s basketball team’s first game of the week was at home on Sunday, Jan. 11 during which the Friars lost 85–55 to Villanova University. On Wednesday, Jan. 14, they traveled to Indianapolis for a game against Butler University where the Friars fell to the Bulldogs 62–52. For their return on the home court on Saturday, Jan. 17, the Friars won 80–77 against Creighton University. It was a good week for Providence’s Sabou Gueye ’26G who scored six points on Sunday, 22 points on Wednesday, and 22 points on Saturday. The Friars’ next game is on Tuesday, Jan. 20 away at Seton Hall University.
Men’s Basketball
The Providence College men’s basketball team played at Amica Mutual Pavillion twice this week. On Tuesday, Jan. 13, the Friars lost 88–82 to Villanova University. The Friars ended this week with a 93–88 win over Creighton University on Friday, Jan. 16. This brought the team’s record to 9–9 overall and 2–5 in the Big East. Stefan Vaaks ’29 was the only player to score over 20 points for each game with 21 points on Tuesday and 24 on Friday. Another top scorer was Jamier Jones ’29 with 24 and 18 points. On Monday, Jan. 19, the team will travel to Milwaukee for a game against Marquette University.
Men’s Ice Hockey
This week, the Providence College men’s hockey team played against Boston College. On Friday, Jan. 16, the Friars traveled to Chestnut Hill for an overtime win of 4–3. On Saturday, Jan. 17, the Friars played in Schneider Arena and won 4–3. This completed their sweep of the Eagles for the first time since 2002. This weekend brings the Friars’ record to 13–7–2 overall and 8–3–1 in Hockey East. Logan Sawyer ’28 secured the Friars the win with his overtime goal on Friday and scored the final point on Saturday as well. The Friars’ next game is on Friday, Jan. 23 against Boston University.
Women’s Ice Hockey
The Providence College women’s hockey team traveled to Chestnut Hill on Friday, Jan. 16 for a game against Boston College. The Friars lost to the Eagles 8–2, bringing their record to 7–14–2 overall and 4–8–2 in Hockey East. The first goal was scored by Sarah Davies ’26, assisted by Audrey Knapp ’27 and Cristina Cavaliere ’26. The last goal was scored by Jessie Pellerin ’28, assisted by Peyton Blaney ’27 and Kiara Kraft ’27. This game brought Knapp and Pellerin’s points to 23 for the season. The Friars’ next game is Monday, Jan. 19 at Yale University.

Men’s Hockey
The men’s hockey team opened their season with two exhibition games at Schneider Arena. On Oct. 3, the Friars beat Simon Fraser University, 7–1. Starting goalie Philip Svedebäck ’26 had a shutout with 11 saves during his time on the ice. On Oct. 5, the Friars also won a close game against Quinnipiac University, 2–1. While the Bobcats struck first, goals by Aleksi Kivioja ’28 and Logan Sawyer ’28 provided the offense necessary to come up with the win. Looking ahead, the team will play the University of Michigan on Oct. 10 and 11 at home. This will be the Wolverines’ first trip to Schneider Arena and the sixth and seventh meetings all-time between the schools.
Field Hockey
The field hockey team is currently 7–4 for the season and 1–2 in conference play. The team fell to the University of Connecticut on Oct. 3 in Storrs with a score of 1–3. Their most recent win came against the University of Vermont on Sunday in overtime. After being tied 1–1, Carly van Benten ’29 came through with an assist from Martu Torre Festa ’28. This was van Benten’s fourth goal this season. The team faces Quinnipiac University on Friday, Oct. 10 and Sacred Heart University on the following Sunday, both at Lennon Family Field.
Women’s Cross Country
The women’s cross country team recently competed in the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational, hosted by Loyola University Chicago, on Oct. 3. The Friars, who are ranked No. 7in the NCAA, scored 224 points and placed No. 10 overall in the invitational. Gabby Schmidt ’28 led the team, placing No. 26 in the women’s 6k, finishing with a time of 20:19.21. Schmidt was the Big East female co-athlete of the week from Sept. 1–7 after winning the Friar Invitational in Attleboro, MA. Following Schmidt in the meet, Cara Laverty ’26 came in No. 37 with a time of 20:28.95. The Friars’ next appearance will be on Friday, Oct. 10, for the New England Championship.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team is currently 4–5–1 for the season and 2–1 in Big East conference play. This includes a huge 5–0 win against Villanova on Oct. 3 at Chapey Field. Bruno Rosa ’26 led the offense with two goals that night. The team’s goaltending resulted in a shutout with a joint effort from Ryan Carney ’29 and Julian Ballester ’29. The team looks for additional Big East wins as they face St. John’s University on Oct.11 and Marquette University on Oct. 17.

Men’s Soccer:
The Providence College men’s soccer team took on Xavier University on Saturday, Sept. 27, in Cincinnati and won 3–2, bringing their record to 3–5–1 for the season and 1–1–0 in the Big East. The Friars started strong, with Angelo Ventrella ’29 scoring the first goal within the sixth minute of the game. Providence was outshot 12–9 by Xavier, yet still managed to secure the win. Providence’s goalkeeper, Ryan Carney ’29, recorded three saves. The Friars will return home for their next game against Villanova University on Friday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m.
Volleyball:
The Providence College volleyball team played DePaul University in Chicago, IL, on Saturday, Sept. 27. The Friars lost 3–0, bringing them to 9–6 for the season and 0–2 in the Big East. Each set was close, with the Friars barely falling short 25–23, 25–20, and 25–19 in the three sets, respectively. Kaia Easterbook ’29 recorded six blocks, and Sophia Adkins ’28 recorded a double-double, with 10 kills and 12 digs. The Friars recorded 34 kills, 11 blocks, and 49 digs. They will play St. John’s University next at home on Friday, Oct. 3.
Women’s Hockey:
The Providence College women’s ice hockey team had their first exhibition match of the season against Sacred Heart University on Saturday, Sept. 27, at home. They won 6–1, beginning when Molly Farace ’29 set off on a breakaway at 10:41 of the first quarter. Kayla Kutes ’26 followed up less than three minutes later with another goal, giving the Friars a strong lead, which set the tone for the remainder of the match. The Friars play their next match against Quinnipiac University at home on Friday, Oct. 3.
Field Hockey:
The Providence College field hockey team faced off against Hofstra University on Sunday, Sept. 28, at home. The Friars won 3–1, improving their overall record to 6–3. The game was scoreless at halftime, with both teams recording six shots, but the Friars broke through in the third quarter when Bo Martina ’27 scored her fifth goal of the season during a penalty corner (33:10). Piper Cline ’28 recorded a career-high three points on one goal and one assist, ranking No. 2 on the team in assists with three. The Friars take on the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT, for their next match on Friday, Oct. 3.

Women’s Soccer
The Providence College women’s soccer team took on the Brown University Bears on Wednesday, Sept. 17. This match, which was played at home, resulted in a 4–0 loss for the Friars, bringing their record for the season to 3–2–1. Midfielder Colleen Casey ’26 led the Friars on the attack with two shots on goal, bringing her season total to eight. While four goals were let in, Ellie Thallman ’G26 also made four saves. The Friars will kick off their Big East season on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at St. John’s University.
Volleyball
The Providence College volleyball team played three games this weekend at the Pelican Invitational. The Friars started their weekend off strong with a 3–0 win against Alabama State on the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 19 at Tulane University. That night, they played another game against Tulane, which the Friars lost 3–1. The Pelican Invitational wrapped up for the Friars on Saturday at New Orleans University where they won 3–1. After the past three games, Providence College volleyball’s record stands at 9–4. Big East play starts next weekend against Marquette and DePaul on the road.
Men’s Soccer
The Providence College men’s soccer team traveled to Seton Hall University for their Big East conference opener on Friday, Sept. 19. The Friars lost the match 2–0 which brings their record to 2–5–0 for the season and to 0–1–0 for the Big East. With five shots on goal, Bruno Rosa ’26 led the Friars on Friday, contributing to all but one of the scoring attempts for the team. Ryan Carney ’29, Providence’s goalkeeper, recorded three saves. The Friars are set to be on the road to head off against Brown University on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Field Hockey
The Providence College field hockey team took on Old Dominion University on Friday, Sept. 19 for their Big East opener. The Friars lost the game 2–0 which brought their record to 4–2 so far this season and 0–1 in the Big East. Providence outshot the Old Dominion Monarchs in the first quarter with two shots on goal, but the Monarchs had leveled the playing field by halftime, bringing the shots to 3–3. Ari Ftorek ’29 had two shots on goal for the games, leading Providence College for the match. The Friars’ next match is at home on Sept. 21 against American University.

Men’s Basketball
The Friars men’s basketball team began the NCAA Tournament in brilliant fashion starting Thursday, March 17 against the number 13 seed, South Dakota State University. The Friars came out victorious 66-57 with Al Durham ’22GS and Noah Horchler ’22GS scoring 13 points each. In the Round of 32, the Friars faced the number 12 seed, Richmond University. Ed Cooley’s team dominated, winning 79-51 with 16 points from Horchler. On Friday, March 25, the Friars will play Kansas University in the Sweet 16.
Women’s Basketball
The Friars’ women’s basketball team competed well in the first round of the Big East tournament, where they fell short to Georgetown University in the first round. An important highlight to note from this game is Emily Archibald ’25 hit her career high 21 points in the game. The team has a lot to be proud of this season, especially two players who earned All Big East recognition, Janai Crooms ’23 and Kylee Sheppard ’25. The Friars conclude their season with an 11-19 record.
Men’s Ice Hockey
The No. 20 Providence College men’s hockey team landed 47 shots on goal but came up short in a 4-2 Hockey East Quarterfinal loss to No. 12 ranked University of Massachusetts Amherst on Saturday, March 12 at the Mullins Center. The Friars had a great season and should be proud. They finished the 2021-22 year at 22-14-2 overall. Moreso, Brett Berard ’24 and Max Crozier ’23, who were named to the Hockey East third team.
Women’s Ice Hockey
The No. 7-seeded Providence College women’s hockey team was defeated by the No. 2 seeded University of Vermont, 4-1, in the quarterfinal round of the Hockey East Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 26. An important shoutout goes to the goaltender Sandra Abstreiter ‘22GS, who was named to the All-Hockey East Second Team as announced by the Hockey East on Friday, Feb. 25. Abstreiter has made 779 total saves and had three shutouts this season. She was recently announced as a semifinalist for the Women’s Hockey Goalie of the Year Award. The Friars conclude the 2021-22 season at 16-14-6 overall.

Men’s Basketball
The Providence College Men’s Basketball Team won three games last week, bringing their record to 24-3 overall and 14-2 in Big East Conference play. They defeated Butler University 71-70 in overtime on Sunday, Feb. 20 and were victorious over Xavier University with a score of 99-92 in triple overtime on Wednesday, Feb. 23. The Friars clinched the Big East Regular Season Championship on Saturday, Feb. 26 for the first time in history with a dominating 72-51 win over Creighton University. Fans young and old stormed the court to celebrate the victory and stayed to watch players and coaches cut down the net in celebration. The Friars wrapped up conference play at Villanova University where the Wildcats came away with a victory in a tight contest 76-74. The final record for the Friars in conference play was 14-3.
Women’s Basketball
The Providence College Women’s Basketball Team went 0-3 in three games this week, bringing their record to 11-18 overall and 6-14 in Big East conference play. They were defeated 62-68 in overtime by St. John’s University on Sunday, Feb. 20, lost 51-57 to Marquette University on Friday, Feb. 25, and struggled against No. 7 University of Connecticut on Sunday, Feb. 27, losing 31-88. The Friars begin the Big East Tournament on Friday, March 4 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT.
Men’s Ice Hockey
The Providence College Men’s Ice Hockey Team won two games this week, bringing their record to 21-13-2 overall and 12-11-1 in conference play. They defeated University of Maine in both home games, winning 4-2 on Friday, Feb. 25 and 3-2 in overtime on Saturday, Feb. 26. The Friars play their last game of the regular season and host their senior night on Friday, March 4 in an exhibition match against the U.S. NTDP Under-18 (USA Hockey National Team Development Program). Their run in the Hockey East Championship begins soon after.
Women’s Ice Hockey
The Providence College Women’s Ice Hockey Team went 1-1 in the Hockey East Tournament last week, bringing their season to a close. They defeated the College of the Holy Cross 3-1 on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at home. However, they could not overcome the strength of No. 2 University of Vermont on the road, losing 4-1 on Saturday, Feb. 26 in the quarterfinals. Lily Hendrikson ’25 scored the lone goal for Providence. The Friars end their season with a record of 16-14-6 overall and 12-12-3 in the Hockey East conference.

Men’s Basketball
The Providence College Men’s Basketball Team won their two games this week, bringing their record to 16-2 overall and 6-1 in Big East conference play. They defeated Georgetown University 83-75 on Thursday, Jan. 20 and were victorious over Butler University with a score of 69-62 on Sunday, Jan. 23. Coach Ed Cooley recorded his 210th victory as the Friars head coach and moved into second place on the PC All-Time Win List with the win over Butler. As of Monday, Jan. 17, the men’s basketball team is ranked No. 21 in the Associated Press Poll and No. 21 in the Coaches Poll. They have been nationally ranked for five consecutive weeks.
Women’s Basketball
The Providence College Women’s Basketball Team went 1-2 in their three games this week, bringing their record to 9-9 this season. They were defeated 62-42 by Seton Hall University on Sunday, Jan. 16 and 71-56 by Villanova University on Friday, Jan. 21. Providence rebounded on Sunday, Jan. 23 as they traveled to Washington, D.C. to take on Georgetown University, who they beat 66-58 in overtime. The Friars previously beat the Hoyas on Dec. 5 at Alumni Hall. The women’s basketball team is currently leading the Big East in field-goal percentage defense (.351), blocked shots (119), and blocks per game (6.6 bpg).
Men’s Ice Hockey
The Providence College Men’s Ice Hockey won their two games this week, bringing their record to 16-9-2 overall and 7-7-1 in conference play. They defeated Boston College in both games, winning 7-0 on the road on Friday, Jan. 21, and 2-1 by a shootout at home on Saturday, Jan. 22. Providence is now fourth place in the Hockey East and trails first-place University of Massachusetts Lowell by seven points in the standings. Next week, the men’s hockey team travels to play UMass on Friday, Jan. 28 and Boston University on Sunday, Jan. 30.
Women’s Ice Hockey
The Providence College Women’s Ice Hockey Team lost their two games this week, bringing their record to 8-9-5 overall and 5-8-2 in conference play. They were defeated by the University of Vermont in both games, losing 1-3 on Friday, Jan. 21 and 1-4 on Saturday, Jan. 22. Providence is now eighth place in the Hockey East and trails first-place Northeastern University by 31 points in the standings. Next week, the women’s hockey team hopes to turn their streak around as they travel to Chestnut Hill, MA to play Boston College.

Men’s Soccer
The Providence College Men’s Soccer Team earned a spot in the United Soccer Coaches Poll on Tuesday, Sept. 21, coming in at no. 24 in the weekly Top 25 National Rankings for Men’s Soccer. Since then, the team extended their win streak to four games with a 3-0 win over Brown University on Wednesday, Sept. 22 and a 3-2 win over Xavier University on Saturday, Sept. 25. Davis Smith ‘21 continued to impress against Xavier, scoring on a header and dishing out an assist in the contest. Smith was named the Big East Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday, Sept. 20. Men’s Soccer looks to continue their winning streak this Saturday, Oct. 2 as they travel to Marquette University.
Women’s Soccer
The Providence College Women’s Soccer Team brought their record to 6-3-1 this week, splitting the games with one win and one loss. The team forced overtime in both games this week, ultimately losing 1-0 against Xavier University on Thursday, Sept.23 and shutting out Creighton University 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 26. Emma Bodner ‘24 won the Big East Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday, Sept. 20, putting up eight saves against Brown University on Thursday, Sept.16. Bodner continued her strong play from the net with eight more saves this past week. Women’s Soccer will be traveling to No. 25 ranked Georgetown University on Sunday, Oct. 3 to take on the Hoyas.
Volleyball
The Providence College Women’s Volleyball Team faced two tough conference matchups this past week, losing 3-2 to Xavier University on Friday, Sept. 24 and 3 – 0 to Butler University on Saturday, Sept. 25. The team registered 43 kills on 133 total attacks, 65 digs, and 39 assists in the game against Butler. Their record now sits at 12-3 on the year. Women’s Volleyball looks to rebound with two more Big East Conference matchups this upcoming week. They face Seton Hall University on Friday, Oct. 1 and St. John’s University on Saturday, Oct. 2.
Field Hockey
The Providence College Field Hockey Team brought their record to an even 5-5 this past week. Four of their five losses this season have come against teams ranked in the Top-25 national poll. The team lost to No. 20-ranked Monmouth University on Sunday, Sept. 19 and No. 22-ranked University of Massachusetts Amherst on Sunday, Sept. 26, but fought well to pull out a tough conference win against Georgetown University, winning 2-1 on Friday, Sept. 24. This upcoming week, Field Hockey will face off against University of Connecticut on Friday, Oct. 1 and Virginia Commonwealth University on Sunday, Oct. 3.

Women’s Soccer
The Providence College Women’s Soccer Team played one game this week, picking up a 2–1 win at home against Brown University on Thursday, Sept. 16. The Friars went down 1–0 in the 17th minute, but were able to battle back and take the win thanks to two clutch second-half goals. Meg Hughes ’24 scored the equalizer in the 62nd minute, and Hannah McNulty ’22 netted the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute. Looking ahead, the Friars will take on Xavier University on Thursday, Sept. 23.
Field Hockey
The Providence College Field Hockey Team went on the road to face Villanova University on Friday, Sept. 17. After trading goals in the first quarter, the Friars went into the half-tied 1–1. Each team scored two goals in the third, but Villanova pulled away in the fourth with two more goals for a 5–3 win. Sophia Pompeo ’23 scored two goals and Amanda Collins ’22 scored the third. The loss dropped the Friars to 4–3 on the year. Looking ahead, the team has a matchup with Monmouth University on Sunday, Sept. 19, and Georgetown University on Friday, Sept. 24.

The Providence College Men’s Soccer Team traveled to South Orange, N.J. to face No. 19 Seton Hall Pirates on Saturday, Sept. 18. The Friars were trailing 2–1 until the 81st minute when they were able to break through with two unanswered goals in two minutes. Brendan McSorley ’24 scored the first and Paulo Lima ’22 was able to notch the go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute. The win pushed the Friars to 4–1–1 on the year, and 1–0 in Big East play. The Friars next take on Brown University on Wednesday, Sept. 22.
Volleyball
The Providence College Volleyball Team continued their strong play as they traveled to the Bronx for the Fordham Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 18. The Friars started the day with a match against St. Francis College and won in straight sets. In the next match, they faced the host, Fordham University, and after four sets they entered the pivotal fifth set tied 2–2. In the deciding set, they were able to win 15–13, taking the victory. The undefeated weekend pushed the Friars to 12–1 on the year.
