Women’s Cross Country

This week, the women’s cross country team was ranked No. 24 in the nation according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association. On Saturday, Sept. 26, the team competed in the Princeton Meadows Challenge, where they scored 87 points and placed third. Gabby Schmidt ’28 was named Big East Female Cross-Country athlete of the week after placing fourth out of a total of 183 runners. Providence College finished ahead of Penn State, which was ranked No. 13, Princeton University, ranked No. 25, and Villanova University, which was ranked No. 29. 

Men’s Hockey

This week, Friartown got their first taste of the 2026–27 men’s hockey squad in an exhibition at  Schneider arena on Friday, Oct. 2. After three periods, the Friars drew with Stonehill 3–3, then went on to win the shootout 1–0. Ryder Cali ’30, a second-round NHL draft pick to the Florida Panthers, scored with 1:24 left in regulation to tie up the game. Aleksi Kivioja ’28 and Julius Sumpf ’29 netted the two other goals for Providence. Logan Sawyer ’28 netted the lone goal in the penalty shootout to give the Friars the win. Next Friday, Oct. 9, the Friars’ regular season commences against St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. 

Men’s Golf

On Tuesday, Sept. 29, the men’s golf team finished fourth out of a 14-team field at the University of Connecticut Invitational at GreatHorse. They had a team score of 593, making the team 17 over par. Since reintroduction, this is the Friars’ best result to date. State rival University of Rhode Island won the invitational, and Bryant University finished right above Providence in third. Callan Fahey ’29 shot rounds of 69 and 73, finishing at –2 overall and tied for second place individually. Zac Georgantas ’30 also found himself in the top 10, coming in eighth after shooting two rounds of 73 for a +2 overall score at the invitational. 

Field Hockey

On Friday, Oct. 2, the women’s field hockey team hosted No. 7 ranked UConn. Ariana Ftorek ’29 netted a goal quickly into the first quarter, giving the Friars a 1–0 lead. Providence held this lead for almost the entire game, until UConn was awarded a penalty with one second of regulation left, and then scored at the buzzer. After a scoreless overtime, the Friars suffered a  heartbreaking loss in the shootout, falling to the nationally ranked Huskies. Providence drops to 8–3 on the season and 2–1 in the Big East. The Huskies improve to 8–1 and remain undefeated in Big East play.
