Men’s Soccer:
The Providence College men’s soccer team tied the University of Akron 3–3 on Sept. 15 in Akron, Ohio. The Friars took a 2–0 lead early in the game thanks to a penalty shot goal from Diego Batista ’26 in the seventh minute and a 31st minute goal from Gevork Diarbian ’24. Akron then got within one by scoring a 41st minute goal, but the Friars answered right back with a Nathan Messer GS ‘23 strike in the 42nd minute. Akron scored two at the end of the game to tie it 3–3. Providence takes on Brown University on Sept. 19 followed by Villanova University on Sept. 23.
Women’s Cross Country:
The Providence College women’s cross-country team won the Friar Invitational on Sept. 8 which consisted of Stony Brook University, the University of Connecticut, and the University of New Hampshire, along with the Friars. Kimberley May ’25 won the 4K race with a time of 13:56.2. Providence won the event with 25 points followed by UConn with 41, then Stony Brook with 66 points, and lastly UNH with 118 points. This marks the Friars’ fourth year in a row having won the event. Kimberly May also was named the Big East Female Athlete of the Week for her performance.
Field Hockey:
The Providence College field hockey team opened up Big East play on Sept. 15 with a match-up against Quinnipiac University and a tough 2–1 loss. Lisa McNamara scored the lone goal for the Friars in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 2–1, but it was not enough. The Friars bounced back with a 5–0 team win against Stonehill College where Bella DelNegro ’25, Ally DeCoste ’24, Bo Martina ’27, Mia Stilley ’26, and Charlotte Lorden ’27 all tallied one goal. Goalie Asia Porter ’24 only needed to make one save the entire match as Stonehill only got one shot on net.
Volleyball:
The Providence College volleyball team participated in the Boston College/Harvard Tournament which consists of the two schools in the tournament’s name, plus Merrimack College and PC. The Friars opened up the tournament with a loss in straight sets to Boston College 25–18, 27–25, and 25–23. Savannah Ivie ’27 led PC in digs with 31 and Macy Taylor ’27 led the team in kills with 14. PC then went on to beat Merrimack in straight sets 25–15, 25–15, 25–19. Ivie had 17 digs and the team had 14 service aces across the match. PC fell to Harvard University in five sets 21–25, 25–14, 15–25, 26–24, and 11–15. Ivie had 21 digs across the five sets and PC had a total of 40 kills. PC will open Big East play on Sept. 22 against Seton Hall University.
